How We Picked

Growing up, you probably ended up mowing the lawn several hundred times. Alright, maybe not several hundred times, but it felt like a ton. Unfortunately, you probably used a gasoline lawn mower that weighed a ton and was really hard to start. Of course, this was during the time of Walkmans and portable CD players.

But today, technology has changed the way we do a lot of things. And now, lawn mowers are evolving too. In fact, now you can get a cordless lawn mower that is a lot lighter and easier to start than ever before (i.e. push button, smartphone app).

So, why are you still using an old gasoline lawn mower when you could get a cordless lawn mower that’s just as good?

Today, we are going to discuss the ten cordless lawn mowers that we feel are the best right now. There were plenty of cordless lawn mowers to look at, but these had the best prices the best quality, with the most features.

EGO Power+ Cordless Lawn Mower

EGO Power+ Cordless Lawn Mower

Specs:

  • Deck Size: 20 Inches
  • Battery Voltage: 56 Volts
  • Weight: 56.2 Pounds
  • Self-Propelled: No
  • Attachments: Yes

The EGO Power+ is a great cordless lawn mower with a strong, high-voltage battery. It comes fully assembled with everything you need to get started. All you need to do is pull it out of the box, charge the battery, install the battery, and go. The battery will take about 30 minutes to charge fully before you are ready to go.

EGO Power+ Cordless Lawn Mower grip

Compared to a gasoline-powered lawn mower, this mower is very lightweight. In fact, it’s about 20 pounds less the most gasoline-powered lawn mowers, weighing in at only 56.2 pounds. Because it’s so light, it makes it easier to work with it for extended periods of time without getting overworked.

EGO Power+ Cordless Lawn Mower in action on grass

With a 20-inch deck size, it is easy to maneuver around tight areas without having to back up and/or readjust multiple times. The blade is very close to the edge of the actual deck size, making it easy to get right up on whatever you’re trying to cut down. But, the deck is made out of ABS plastic so you don’t want to bang it up against too many things as it may dent it up or scratch it.

EGO Power+ Cordless Lawn Mower blade

Handling the grass clippings can be managed in one of three ways. One, you can use the side discharge set up which doesn’t blow the grass very far away (just outside of the right wheel). Or two, use the bagging attachment to capture all of the grass clippings. One thing we would like to point out is that the bagging attachment works great for whatever the EGO picks up; but, you’re probably only going to see grass as the suction from the blades is not very powerful (i.e. you won’t see sticks and other fine debris in the bagging attachment). And finally, you can use a mulching attachment too. Surprisingly, this attachment works fairly well leaving behind pretty small clippings (unless you have a lot of tall, wet grass).

EGO Power+ Cordless Lawn Mower battery

Powering the EGO is a 56-volt rechargeable battery that lasts around 45 minutes under normal use (this does not include tall grass). To recharge the battery takes approximately 30 minutes and you’re back up and running again. We recommend buying a second battery so that you can stay up and running for as long as you need.

EGO Power+ Cordless Lawn Mower folded

When you’re done mowing, all you have to do is fold up the cordless lawn mower and roll it wherever you want. The Power+ makes it a breeze to carry/push the lawn mower wherever you need, even when folded up, as you can use the handle to help navigate it easily. Because it folds down so small, you can put it almost anywhere; in fact, you can even stand it up on its side. While not in use, EGO Recommends that you disconnect the batteries and leave them on the charger or on a shelf that is protected from water and/or humidity (i.e. a cool, dry place).

What We Like

All electric lawn mowers will be quiet, but the EGO Power+ is amazingly quiet. In all honesty, it’s quieter than a car that is idling. The battery last around 45 minutes, but only takes 30 minutes to charge, so with two batteries you can easily finish up your yard and no time. And, it has LED headlights so that you can work at any time of the day or night.

Overall

With a battery that has more power than most other cordless lawn mowers, this is one of the best options currently on the market today. Of course, it still needs multiple batteries to handle larger yards (which can be purchased separately). Even so, if you pick the EGO Power+ with the 56-volt battery, you’ll be happy with your purchase.

Greenworks Twin Force Cordless Lawn Mower

Greenworks Twin Force Cordless Lawn Mower

Specs:

  • Deck Size: 20 Inches
  • Battery Voltage: 40 Volts
  • Weight: 42.5 Pounds
  • Self-Propelled: No
  • Attachments: Yes

Next up is a lawn mower that you would expect to work great as it has the word Green in its name. The Greenworks Twin Force is unique in the fact that it actually uses dual blades to obliterate grass. getting started with the lawn mower is simple as all you have to do is pull it out of the box, charge the batteries, install them, and go. If you wanted to test the unit out, then you should start out by charging the 2 mAh battery as it will only take about sixty minutes to charge.

Greenworks Twin Force Cordless Lawn Mower in action

For those who want a truly lightweight option, this is a great choice. It literally only weighs 42.5 pounds. Again, equipped with a 20-inch deck size, this will be easy to maneuver in tight areas without having to readjust frequently. One really neat feature of the Twin Force is the fact that it is equipped with dual 10-inch plates. This is actually better for a cordless lawn mower as it doesn’t require as much torque to get up to speed as a single 20-inch blade would take. And, even though the deck is made out of ABS plastic, it is extremely durable and somewhat scratch resistant.

Greenworks Twin Force Cordless Lawn Mower cutting deck

And just like the Power+ mentioned earlier, you can handle the grass clippings in one of three ways: side discharge, bagging attachment, mulching attachment. This lawn mower works best when using the mulching attachment as it does a great job of chopping everything up into very small, fine pieces. Something else to make note of is the fact that it seems to adjust for thicker grass automatically. While this may drain the battery faster (and it does), it’s a nice feature as others tend to get bogged down when they encounter thicker grass.

Greenworks Twin Force Cordless Lawn Mower unboxed

The Twin Force is powered by a 40-volt rechargeable battery that works with many other of the Greenworks products. So, if you already have additional batteries from some of the other equipment, they will work with this lawn mower as well. The 4 mAh battery takes approximately two hours to charge and lasts for around 45 to 50 minutes. The 2 mAh battery takes approximately one hour to charge and last for around 20 to 25 minutes. In total, using both batteries, you should expect around 60 to 75 minutes of run time.

What We Like

Starting out, we really like the fact that this lawn mower uses the G-Max 40-volt batteries that are interchangeable with all of the different Greenworks products that work with a G-Max battery. Another feature that we really like is the fact that it automatically ramps up whenever it encounters thicker grass.

Overall

The dual-blade design makes it a lot easier to cut through thick grass without getting bogged down. Using the two batteries included, you can easily cut for around 60 to 70 minutes without needing to stop for a recharge. And the batteries are compatible with other Greenworks products as well.

Just like the last lower, if you want to test it out, then you should probably start out by charging the to mAh battery as it will only take about an hour to charge.

Earthwise 20-Inch Cordless Lawn Mower battery compartment open

Now, this cordless mower weighs 53 pounds with a 20-inch deck size. As with all the other 20-in decks, this is extremely maneuverable in tight spaces. But, unlike some of the other decks, this is not made out of ABS Plastic. In fact, the deck is actually made out of steel which is why it weighs more than some of the other unit; the deck can survive normal bumps and bruises without any problems.

Earthwise 20-Inch Cordless Lawn Mower in front of garage

This mower is also equipped with the ability to handle grass clippings mulching, bagging, or discharge. This appears to be a fairly well-balanced lawn mower as all three options work pretty much identically.

Earthwise 20-Inch Cordless Lawn Mower batteries

The mower is powered by a 40-volt rechargeable battery that has an actual LED battery monitor included with it; now, you will know exactly how much power you have left before your battery completely dies. The 4 mAh battery takes about 2 hours to charge and last about 45 to 50 minutes. And, the 2 mAh battery takes about one hour to charge and will last for about 20 to 30 minutes. In total, you should expect between 65 to 80 minutes of use on a full set of batteries.

Earthwise 20-Inch Cordless Lawn Mower side

What We Like

No one likes to run out of power, and neither do we, which is why we really like this cordless mower. Even though this should be an option on all batteries, the included LED battery monitor helps us to know how much power we have left before we get stranded.

Overall

If you want a budget-friendly, cordless mower, then this is a great option for you. It’s a solid contender in the cordless mower market with a lot of features, a great battery life, and included attachments that will make mowing easier.

It can handle most bumps and bruises without any problem, although you probably don’t want to slam it into the side of the house.

Ryobi RY40180 Cordless Lawn Mower front

This is one of the few lawn mowers that does not have a discharge option. Instead, you have the option to mulch or bag. Mulching seems to require a little more power than the bagging option, so if the battery life is a big issue for you, stick with the bagging attachment.

Ryobi RY40180 Cordless Lawn Mower folded

This mower is powered by a 40-volt rechargeable battery that actually works with other Ryobi cordless products as well. One really nice feature that Ryobi included is the ability to use two different batteries at one time, helping to increase your run time from 40 to 50 minutes to 80 to 100 minutes.

What We Like

While an extra battery does add a little more weight to this unit, it does give us a long run time. It has a load-sensing motor that speeds up when needed so that it can conserve the battery whenever the grass isn’t as hard to cut.

Overall

This is a great cordless lawn mower that can handle yards that are half an acre or less with ease. even if the grass is a little tall, this mower just chews right through it. And, the battery works with many other Ryobi cordless products too.

Even so, it is still very maneuverable. And, the deck is stainless steel, not plastic. A steel deck is much stronger, able to withstand more accidental bumps than an ABS deck. But, what makes this so great is it is also self-propelled. Most of the other cordless lawn mowers on this list are not self-propelled. So for those who need a self-propelled option, this is it; even though it does weigh 90 pounds. Snapper did it right with this one. This self-propelled beast can cut through just about anything with its ultra-strong mode. Even though it weighs 74 pounds, it is still very maneuverable and easy-to-use. And, the deck is able to withstand a lot of abuse, just like every other Dewalt cordless product. Managing the grass should not be a problem with its 3-in-1 system, giving you the option to mulch, discharge, or bag off your clippings.

Dewalt 2×20-Volt Cordless Lawn Mower on grass

Where we wish DeWalt had done a little better is with the battery. Even though they offer a 2×20-volt system, it seems as though they could have given us a few more volts to work with. In fact, most other cordless systems give us 40+ volts to work with. And yet, this cordless lawn mower still seems to pack a serious punch. Somehow, they managed to squeeze every ounce of power out of this battery to keep up with most of the other lawn mowers on this list; imagine how much better this would have been with a 40+ volt system.

Buyer’s Guide To Find The Best Cordless Lawn Mower

With so many different cordless lawn mowers on the market right now, how do you pick the right one? Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to answer for you today. Below, we are going to discuss the features and/or factors that you should be looking at when comparing cordless lawn mowers.

Battery Life / Power

Most cordless lawn mower batteries tend to last between 40 minutes and 1 hour. However, some can go as long as two hours under the right circumstances. There are multiple factors that affect battery life, but the two biggest are how many milliamp-hour (mAh) the battery is rated for and the voltage rating of the battery.

Again, most cordless lawn mower batteries are rated around 40 volts. However, some are rated as high as 84 volts. The higher the voltage rating, the more powerful and efficient the lawn mower battery will be. In fact, most lawn mowers with a lot of extra features such as self-propelled wheels and LED lighting use higher voltage batteries.

If you need a long battery life, then look for a cordless lawn mower that uses a higher voltage battery. Or, make sure that you have enough batteries to keep going when one and/or more batteries die. One thing to remember, cordless lawn mower batteries tend to recharge at the same rate that they use power, which means you can most likely get away with using two cordless batteries to finish your yard.

Performance

Next, you need to consider how well each cordless lawn mower performs. What we mean by this is that it provides everything you need, without making you do more work. For instance, if you have tall grass, then you need a lawn mower that has a high-speed electric motor with a very powerful, high-voltage battery. Or, maybe you don’t have a lot of tall grass but you have a big yard. Then, you would need a cordless lawn mower that has a high-capacity battery with the ability to fast-charge quickly.

Deck Size

While one or two inches doesn’t seem like a big difference, when you are mowing the lawn, it can mean the difference between an extra 10 to 20 minutes of work and being able to go inside and relax. However, deck sizes vary greatly between cordless lawn mowers. You can find cordless lawn mower with a 14-inch deck size or you can find one with a 48-inch deck size (not a push mower). When considering the size of a deck, think about the size of your yard. A yard that is only 1/4 of an acre won’t need anything larger than a 20-inch deck. However, a yard that is more than an acre would definitely need a deck size that’s larger than 20 inches.

Weight

While most cordless lawn mowers will not weigh the same amount as a gasoline-powered lawn mower, they can still get fairly hefty. The size of the lawn mower, size of the electric motor, and the size of the battery can directly affect how heavy a cordless lawn mower weighs.

If you need a large deck size, with a powerful motor for tall grass, and a high-capacity battery, there’s a good chance that your lawn mower will weigh more than a mid-level lawn mower would. For those who need a lighter cordless lawn mower, they should consider smaller deck sizes with smaller batteries.

Extra Features

Other features that should be considered include self-propelled lawn mowers and lawn mowers that are equipped with bagging attachments and/or LED lighting. Add-on attachments can enhance the ability of the lawn mower to make it more effective for your lawn care needs. But beware, extra features require extra power, which can make it more costly and add more weight to the lawn mower.

Build Quality

In the past, if it wasn’t made out of steel, it wasn’t worth buying. But, things have changed and so has our ability to make quality products using other materials. Now, cordless lawn mowers are built using high-density ABS plastic and other durable materials, reducing the need for heavier materials like steel.

Does this mean that they aren’t as durable as the older gasoline-powered, steel-built lawn mowers? Maybe… While they probably won’t last in the elements like an older-model lawn mower, they will probably last just as long when properly kept and maintained.

Cost Of Ownership

And finally, cordless lawn mowers have a very large price range. Some can be purchased for as little as $200, but some can be as expensive as $2,000. Some of this is brand and marketing, while some of this is on the product and the features that it offers.

While it would make sense that a $2,000 unit would be more efficient and last longer than a $200 unit, don’t get tricked into buying something based on fluff and marketing. Instead, make sure that you look at everything we’ve mentioned above while also considering previous customer reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is a cordless lawn mower just as good as a gasoline lawn mower?

A: The purpose of a lawn mower is to cut grass. In the most basic sense, cordless lawn mowers are just as good as gasoline lawn mowers. However, cordless lawn mowers are limited by the battery life and the amount of torque that they can make (which is based on the voltage of the battery). Cordless lawn mowers generally cannot produce the same amount of torque as their gasoline counterparts. But, they don’t require the same type of maintenance as a gasoline lawn mower either. A cordless lawn mower does not require oil and/or fuel to function, instead relying on an electric motor and battery.

Q: Can a cordless lawn mower cut through wet grass?

A: Technically, it is possible to cut through slightly wet grass. Is it the best idea? No! A cordless lawn mower is powered by a battery with an electric motor. Water and electricity do not tend to mix very well. As such, it’s not recommended that you try to use a lawn mower when the grass is wet or the yard itself as wet. If a cordless lawn mower gets wet, it is best to let it sit and dry completely before trying to use it again. Water can cause certain parts on the cordless lawn mower to become rusty and/or inoperable.

Q: Can a cordless lawn mower cut through tall grass?

A: Cordless lawn mowers can do a lot of the same things that a gasoline lawn mower can do. Some cordless lawn mowers have the ability to cut through tall grass easily, especially if they have a very high voltage battery. However, most cordless lawn mowers cannot cut through tall grass easily as they do not have enough voltage and/or torque to avoid bogging down.

Q: How do you clean a cordless lawn mower?

A: To clean a gasoline lawn mower, you simply turn the water hose on and wash everything off. But, water is not near as compatible with an electric motor and/or components. As such, you cannot use flowing water to clean a cordless lawn mower. Instead, you would need to use a damp rag and carefully wipe down the surfaces of the cordless lawn mower and the blades. Some companies even include special chemicals to help protect the cordless lawn mower from water.

Q: How long will the battery last on a cordless lawn mower?

A: Most cordless lawn mower batteries will last between 40 minutes to 1 hour. Some can last up to two hours, but they cost a ton of money. Depending on the size of your yard, you may need to have multiple batteries available and charged up. Generally, a single battery can cover approximately 1/4 of an acre before it will die. Therefore, if you have a 1-acre yard, you will need up to four batteries to complete the job (or recharge one battery while using the other).

Q: How long will it take to recharge the battery of a cordless lawn mower?

A: Most cordless lawn mower batteries take about 40 minutes to 1 hour to charge, which is great as this is about how long it takes for the other battery to die. Most users can get away with just using two different batteries. However, if you can afford it, you should buy extra batteries so that you don’t have to worry about any downtime.

Q: Does the voltage rating matter?

A: Bigger is always better! And, when it comes to battery voltage, the voltage rating matters. The higher the voltage rating, the more powerful the lawn mower is and the longer it can last on a single charge. Higher voltage batteries can give you the ability to have a self-propelled lawn mower with extra features such as LED lighting and stronger engines. Most battery voltages for a cordless lawn mower are around 40 volts; however, some batteries go as high as 84 volts. Your voltage requirements will depend on the size of your yard and the needs of your lawn mower (i.e. self-propelled, LED lighting).

Q: Can I get a self-propelled cordless lawn mower?

A: Yes, self-propelled lawn mowers are an option. However, you will need to make sure that you find a self-propelled cordless lawn mower that has a high-voltage battery rating. Self-propelled cordless lawn mowers tend to draw a lot more power as they are using multiple motors to do the same amount of work. Most cordless lawn mowers leave out the option of a self-propelled unit to keep the price down and the requirements of the battery down as well.

Q: Can I hook an extension cord to a cordless lawn mower if my battery is dead?

A: In most cases, you cannot use an extension cord with a cordless lawn mower, especially while it is in use. However, there are some manufacturers that do give you this option simply because they understand that a battery can die at the absolute worst time. But, this defeats the purpose of a cordless lawn mower and that is why it’s not truly an option on most cordless lawn mowers.

Q: Can a cordless lawn mower mulch my yard clippings?

A: Yes, a cordless lawn mower can mulch your yard clippings. However, this requires more power and a stronger battery to be done. Most cordless lawn mowers don’t discharge their grass clippings. So, in theory, they are already mulching your yard clippings. But, a cordless lawn mower that has a stronger battery can spin faster and cut through more of your yard clippings without bogging down.

Conclusion

There is something to be said about a lazy afternoon, walking behind a lawn mower. In the past, you would simply grab a gas can, fill up your lawn mower, and low until the yard was complete. Now, instead of using gas we use batteries. The concept is the same, but the technology is different.

Cordless lawn mowers give us the convenience of electric power, without all the maintenance of a gasoline lawn mower, while still finding a way to cut the cord of most electric lawn mowers. These lawn mowers are much lighter and easier to push than the heavier gasoline lawn mowers.
